the gift of awareness

Lucid Yoga – a short explanation

1   Expressed clearly; easy to understand.

‘a lucid account’
‘write in a clear and lucid style’

1.1 Showing or having the ability to think clearly, especially in intervals between periods of confusion or insanity.

‘he has a few lucid moments every now and then.

1.2  Psychology (of a dream) experienced with the dreamer feeling awake, aware of dreaming, and able to control events consciously.

  2   literary Bright or luminous.
‘birds dipped their wings in the lucid flow of air’

Late 16th century (in lucid (sense 2)): from Latin lucidus (perhaps via French lucide or Italian lucido) from lucere ‘shine’, from lux, luc- ‘light’.

Our choice of Lucid then reflects a statement of clarity, clear apprehension, the experience of Lucid Dreaming and a reference to light and luminosity.

from the Sanskrit root Yuj – “to join”, “to unite”, “to attach”

1. expressed in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali – Sutra 1.2 as “Complete mastery over the modifications of the mind”.

(please see here for a more comprehensive translation of this Sutra)

In other words, to unite with an experience of complete stillnessmodifications in this context refers to the movement of the mind. Semantically speaking, normal day to day experience can be understood as very dualistic – the perceived and the perceiver, Yoga underpins this though and provides the means to engage a level of experience that we would regard as non dualistic – i.e. the perceived and the perceiver become one. Indeed becoming Lucid in a dream – recognising the dream for what it is – leads one into a state of Non Duality naturally, the dream and the dreamer are unquestionably One.

Therefore the combination of the words Lucid and Yoga here offers an approach to Yoga deeply entwined with the skillful use of Lucid Dreaming . The Lucid Dreaming opens your awareness to deeper and deeper levels of Non Duality whilst the Yoga practices condition you to enter into a more consistent relationship with this experience of Non Duality, both compliment each other perfectly.
